Sometimes I hate the world we live in. I read that that one cult...errr..church down in Kansas is planning on protesting at Heath Ledger's funeral in NYC because he played a gay character in Brokeback Mountain. I had heard about this group before but didn't really pay attention until I watched a documentary on Logo earlier this week. The leader was on there and his just utter hatred of "fags" as he calls 'em was just so irritating that I just wanted to reach through the tv screen and strangle him. I am not saying people are not entitled to their opinions, however, when they are ignorant and unjustified it really really pisses me off. These are the same people that protest at the funerals of soldiers killed in Iraq. That really irritates me. I mean can we let these people be? I am sure many of these soldiers did not want to be involved in an unjustified war; especially ones that enlisted before it all began. They probably thought if it came down to war it would be in defense of our country; not policing the world. But I digress. But don't these protesters think about the families they are causing more strain on? Heck no, they don't think. They want to cause a problem and get people all riled up. Of course, look where they come from-I would not want to be from the south. It's a different world.
Of course, what bugs me more is how this group along with like others in the gay community are so hurt by Heath's death. And while I will admit, I am surprised, I don't exactly think of him in the respect that others do. He played a character in a movie-he was not gay. I think that the movie was cinematically significant, but technically, I don't think his character was gay. I think he had a bond-a love- a fondness for a friend that went way beyond sexuality. But see, that is yet another rant. Still, people label the movie as the gay cowboy movie and I just don't see it that way. But whatever.
Anyway, the point is, protesting a funeral of someone just because of a character they played in a movie is oh so foolish for so many reasons. And I know a lot of people probably judged him because of this. And it's so stupid. And that is what I'm so sick of; the utter stupidity in this world. Can't we just love people for who they are and be tolerant of all? We only have a short time here and being so judgmental and petty and mean and discriminatory is so wrong. And I mean in all respects; race, sexuality, social class. In the long run, we're all here striving for the same thing and we should work together instead of always being at odds with one another.
And those are my thoughts this morning.
